Eight hours are often considered an arbitrary, slightly old-fashioned target, something a doctor says out of habit, not a number with real biological weight. Research says otherwise. Eight hours is not a rounded ideal; it’s close to the point where most of the body's nightly repair systems actually complete their work. And the difference between six and eight hours is not gradual. It’s the difference between a system that runs halfway through its maintenance cycle and one that finishes it.
The brain completes a cycle it cannot complete with less sleep
Sleep occurs in cycles of about ninety minutes, through light sleep, deep slow-wave sleep, and REM sleep, and a full eight-hour night allows for four to six complete cycles. Deep sleep, where most physical repair happens, is concentrated in the earlier cycles of the night. REM sleep, where the brain consolidates memories and processes emotions, is concentrated in the later ones. A night shortened to six hours does not lose these phases evenly but disproportionately cuts off the later cycles. REM sleep is thus the first casualty of a shortened night. Eight hours is approximately the minimum duration for deep sleep and REM sleep to occur in the proportions for which the brain is built.
What exactly is being repaired

Eight hours of sleep in research is associated with better insulin sensitivity, more stable appetite-regulating hormones such as leptin and ghrelin, and lower evening cortisol than shorter sleep durations. Shortened sleep is consistently linked to increased ghrelin, the hormone that signals hunger, and decreased leptin, the hormone that signals satiety. This combination explains why too little sleep in long-term studies is so consistently associated with higher caloric intake and weight gain, regardless of changes in exercise or conscious diet.
Is more than eight hours also a problem?
Some population studies find associations between significantly more than nine hours of sleep and poorer health outcomes, but researchers are cautious about interpreting this as harm from more sleep. In most cases, unusually long sleep in these studies is more plausibly explained by an underlying illness that causes both the extended sleep and the poorer outcome. The consistent, well-documented finding of sleep research remains: seven to nine hours is the range with the best outcomes across cognitive, metabolic, and cardiovascular measures, and eight lies comfortably in the middle of this range, not at one of its extremes.

Eight hours is not a wellness wish without evidence. It is approximately the time the brain and body need to complete the concrete, documented repair processes that shorter sleep interrupts. The difference between six and eight hours is not two additional hours of rest. It is the difference between a maintenance cycle that finishes and one that is interrupted mid-way night after night, with costs that accumulate and rarely announce themselves before the pattern has continued for years.
