The research is clear on one point, and it contradicts most productivity advice: Protecting sleep is not what you sacrifice for performance. It is the mechanism upon which performance depends. Athletes who deliberately extended their sleep in controlled studies showed measurable improvements in reaction time, accuracy, and decision quality—the same cognitive functions that directly lead to peak professional performance. This relationship is not a compromise to be balanced. It is a single system, and anyone who considers one half optional degrades both.
